Hyderabad: Vehicle Registration Card Shortage Due to Tender Issues

The Road Transport Authority (RTA) offices in Greater Hyderabad are facing a shortage of vehicle registration cards (RC cards). This problem has been ongoing for almost a month. The main reason is that the previous tender for supplying these cards expired in August. Since then, the printing and distribution of the cards have stopped, leaving many motorists waiting.

Officials say they plan to call for a new tender by the end of October. Once the tender is finalized, the printing and dispatch of RC cards will resume. However, this delay has caused significant issues for vehicle owners who are trying to get their registration cards.

This shortage has affected several RTA offices, including those in Moosarambagh, Uppal, Ibrahimpatnam, Bandlaguda, Kondapur, and Attapur. Thousands of motorists have been unable to receive their RC cards since August. Many have been making repeated visits to RTA offices, hoping to get their cards, but have been left disappointed.

Motorists are frustrated by the delays. Some have complained that they have faced difficulties when trying to fix number plates, cross State borders, or during vehicle checks. With the festive season approaching, many people are driving vehicles with only temporary registration (TR) stickers, which has caused even more inconvenience.

M Dayanand, the general secretary of the Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union, has urged the RTA to keep applicants informed about the delay. He suggested that the RTA should notify people through the media or send SMS updates to those waiting for their cards.

RTA activist Mahmood Hussain Makke explained that once the new tender is issued, it will take around 15-20 days for the selected company to manufacture and print the RC cards. Only after this will the cards be dispatched to the applicants, meaning people will have to wait even longer.

In a recent development, the Telangana High Court lifted a ban that had been placed on Color Plast, a global company known for manufacturing smart cards. The Transport Department had previously barred the company, but the High Court has now allowed Color Plast to participate in the upcoming tender process.

Color Plast had filed a legal case to challenge the ban. The High Court ruled in their favor, meaning they will now be able to compete in the tender to supply the RC cards.
