Hyderabad: A group of 50 people gathered at Sattva Necklace Mall in Kavadiguda to take part in a unique musical therapy session led by The Djembe Circle. This event used the djembe, a traditional West African drum, to help participants relax, connect, and express themselves through rhythm and music.
The djembe is a goblet-shaped drum made from African hardwood and covered with animal skin. It belongs to the percussion family and produces sound through vibrations from its stretched membrane. In West Africa, the djembe has long been used in community gatherings, celebrations, and healing practices.
Sai Kumar, founder of The Djembe Circle, explained the goal behind the initiative. “I have a PhD in Musicology and believe in healing the mind and body through music. The djembe is a powerful tool for bringing people together through joy and rhythm. Our drum circles have been held in both India and the UK for the past five years,” he said.
The Djembe Circle offers many benefits. For individuals, it helps reduce stress, promotes creativity, and encourages mindfulness. Playing the drum requires concentration and deep breathing, which helps calm the mind. It can also serve as a form of light physical activity, improving overall health.
For groups, the sessions help build teamwork and social connections. People work together to create rhythms, which fosters communication and unity. These gatherings also provide a chance to learn about different cultures through the use of traditional and modern beats from around the world.
At a typical Djembe Circle session, participants can expect to enjoy fun rhythm games, learn both traditional and modern drumming patterns, and engage in freestyle drumming. The sessions are designed to be inclusive and do not require any prior musical experience.
Overall, The Djembe Circle offers a joyful and healing experience that brings people together through the simple yet powerful act of drumming.
