The Revanth Reddy government in Hyderabad is planning to address the city’s growing traffic issues by constructing underground tunnels. Currently, road expansion in the city is facing challenges, leading to worsening traffic congestion. To combat this problem, officials have suggested that building tunnels is the most effective solution.

With 12,000 kilometers of roads in the city, 500 to 700 kilometers are narrow, causing slow-moving traffic and long delays for motorists. Government officials have advised Chief Minister Revanth Reddy that constructing tunnels is the best solution due to obstacles like large buildings hindering road expansion. Experts also support the idea of tunnels as a viable solution.

Several proposals for tunnel construction in the city are being developed. Tunnels will be built in different routes starting from ITC Kohinoor, with detailed project reports being prepared for a total of 39 kilometers of tunnels. These include a 9 km tunnel from ITC Kohinoor to Wipro Circle via Khajaguda and Nanakramguda, an 8 km tunnel to JNTU via Mindspace Junction, and a 7 km tunnel via Jubilee Hills Road No-45 to Road No-10. Additionally, a 6 km tunnel from GVK Mall to Nanalnagar via Masab tank and a 9 km tunnel from Nampally to Chandrayanagutta Inner Ring Road via Charminar are also in the works.

Officials are confident that the city’s one-way underground drainage system will not pose any issues for tunnel construction using the jacking system. It is believed that once these tunnels are completed, they will significantly alleviate the city’s traffic problems.
