Hyderabad: Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, head of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, praised the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for its road maintenance efforts in Hyderabad. During a Road Safety Committee meeting at Taj Hotel, he applauded their road safety and accident prevention measures.
The meeting, led by Justice Sapre, included Telangana Chief Secretary K Rama Krishna Rao, Home Department Special Chief Secretary Ravi Gupta, DGP Dr. Jitender, MA&UD Secretary Illambarthi, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, and key officials from Police, Revenue, HMDA, R&B, and Traffic Police.
Justice Sapre emphasized the importance of stronger enforcement to reduce accidents. He encouraged authorities to strive for zero casualties on Telangana’s roads, citing the Bhagavad Gita: “If you save other lives, God will save your life.”
Various departments shared their road safety initiatives. RV Karnan presented detailed safety measures within GHMC areas for drivers and pedestrians.
The meeting highlighted key achievements: traffic calming and safety markings on 1,687.76 km of roads, zebra crossings at 3,949 spots, transverse bar markings at 3,453 locations, and 3,335 signages, including speed limits and caution boards.
For pedestrian safety, 212.71 km of footpaths were laid or fixed, 23 Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) were initiated (15 completed, others ongoing), and 109 junction improvements started (50 completed, 33 underway, 19 unfeasible, 7 under land acquisition).
Since July 2025, the GHMC addressed black spot rectification by filling 1,442 potholes, fixing 574 catch pits, replacing 328 covers, and completing 12 median works.
Road development projects for 2024–25 and 2025–26 focused on key areas like Abids, MJ Market, Khairtabad, Tolichowki Flyover, Sanath Nagar, Madhapur, Secunderabad, and Saidabad. These aimed at enhancing safety sustainably. Commissioner Karnan reaffirmed GHMC’s dedication to safer roads through engineering improvements and disciplined traffic measures. Justice Sapre commended GHMC’s efforts and urged all stakeholders to intensify their road safety initiatives.
