International Dog Day is observed every year on August 26 to raise awareness about mistreated and displaced dogs worldwide. The day was created by Colleen Paige, an animal behaviorist and advocate for animal well-being. Many animals in need find refuge and new opportunities for a better life in rescue homes, shelters, and nonprofit organizations.

A recent study conducted by All Creatures Great and Small (ACGS) and the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) found that over half a million animals have been mistreated by humans in the past decade. People For Animals (PFA) is a non-governmental and non-profit association based in Hyderabad that protects and provides a better life for all animals.

Mrs. Vasanthi Vadi, President of People for Animals, expressed concern about the increasing intolerance towards animals. She emphasized the importance of recognizing and advocating for animals, as they also deserve a secure existence. By uniting compassionate individuals, we can work together to ensure the well-being of animals.

PFA has been rescuing animals from the streets for over 15 years, providing them with safe and healthy homes. They have rescued over 10,000 animals, including dogs, cats, camels, and domestic animals. They also rescue snakes, birds, black kites, and camels during festivals like Nag Panchami.

The shelter mainly receives cases such as accidents, wounds, electrocution, lost or abandoned animals, tick fever, physically abused dogs, and electrocuted Bonnet Macaques. After rescuing these distressed animals, PFA focuses on creating a sense of belonging and affection by offering a safe and nurturing environment. They provide necessary medical care and attention during the animals’ recovery.

If anyone wants to report distressed animals, they can call PFA’s helpline. To report cruelty cases, they can call a separate number or send an email to the organization.

Animal rights activists emphasize the need for a team effort from individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to prevent and address dog abuse. They advocate for stronger penalties for animal cruelty offenders and the elimination of practices that harm dogs, such as puppy mills and dog fighting.

International Dog Day serves as a reminder to be kind and compassionate towards dogs and all animals. By working together, we can make a difference in their lives and ensure their well-being.
