The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad has taken extensive measures to protect its animals from the high temperatures of summer. Over 200 sprinklers and small rain guns have been installed in all enclosures, with a particular focus on those housing herbivores. Additionally, more than 1,000 foggers have been placed in the Reptile House, New Macaws, Pheasantry, and Aviary areas. The zoo has also provided shade nets and coolers to various enclosures, including those for monkeys, carnivores, and omnivores. Air conditioners and exhaust fans have been installed in the Nocturnal Animal house and cub rearing centre.

To prevent dehydration and summer stress, the zoo is providing seasonal fruits like watermelon, musk melon, and citrus variety fruits to all apes, monkeys, primates, birds, and bears. The veterinary section has provided supplements like Glucon-D, Electral Powder, Vitamin-C supplements, B-Complex supplements, Stresswell, and Thermo Care Liquid in water. Temporary shady shelters have been provided to all Herbivore enclosures, and Kashkash Thattis have been made available to all Animal House enclosures to protect animals from direct sunlight exposure.

The zoo is also continuously watering its lawns and gardens to keep the enclosure and its surrounding green and cool. All animal houses are being provided adequate protected cold water from time to time to avoid dehydration. Animal keepers, head animal keepers, and park supervisors are taking preventive steps to avoid summer stress to the wild animals, birds, and reptiles. The curator has inspected all the summer seasonal arrangements and instructed the field staff to keep a constant vigil on the animals, birds, and reptiles. He has also appreciated the efforts put in by the animal keepers, Malis, and workshop technicians in the maintenance to overcome summer-related issues. These measures have been taken in the interest of animals’ health, care, and protection of the mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals at the Nehru Zoological Park.
