Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has highlighted the growing unemployment crisis affecting IT professionals and announced the establishment of Young India Skills University to equip youth with industry-relevant skills. Addressing concerns about job losses due to Artificial Intelligence, the Chief Minister stated that thousands of IT professionals who once dreamed of working in America and earning in dollars are now struggling to find employment and have become dependent on their parents.
The Young India Skills University operates on a Public-Private Partnership model and is chaired by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group of Companies. The university’s Board of Directors includes the CEO of Dr. Reddy’s Labs and the CEO of Apollo Hospitals, bringing corporate leadership directly into education planning. These industry leaders are responsible for designing curriculum, selecting students, providing training, and ensuring job placements.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the university was created after recognizing that traditional government universities were not delivering adequate results. With 14 universities already under government purview, adding another conventional institution would not address the skills gap. The university offers certificate, diploma, and degree courses designed to make students globally competitive in the changing job market.
Recent placement data shows significant success for the initiative. Two months ago, the Vice-Chancellor of Young India Skills University announced that all 1,000 students who completed training secured job placements. Similarly, every trainee from the Advanced Training Centre in Boath, Adilabad received employment with Tata Companies.
The state government has restructured its skills training ecosystem by bringing together previously fragmented departments. ITIs were earlier under the Labour Department, Polytechnics under Technical Education, and the Skills University under IT & Industries. All these institutions have now been consolidated under the Young India Skills University umbrella, with the government investing hundreds of crores of rupees in the initiative.
The Chief Minister stated that the university’s approach focuses on preparing youth for future jobs rather than obsolete positions. By integrating Polytechnics, ATCs, and ITIs under one framework, the government aims to create a comprehensive skills training system that responds directly to industry requirements and ensures employment opportunities for trained students.
