Massive Food Safety Drive Conducted Across Telangana Ahead of Diwali 2025
In an unprecedented move, the Telangana government has conducted a widespread #FoodSafetyTelangana drive across all 33 districts of the state, focusing on sweet manufacturing units and retailers. This statewide initiative comes as part of the festive inspections aimed at ensuring the safety and quality of food products during the Diwali celebrations.
A total of 95 sweet units were subjected to inspections, with 77 enforcement samples and 157 surveillance samples collected and forwarded for laboratory analysis. In places where ‘Food Safety on Wheels’ were available, spot testing was also carried out to ensure immediate corrective actions.
However, the drive revealed some significant violations in various food establishments. The use of synthetic food colours in milk-based sweets such as jalebi, laddus, and khoya items was one of the major issues identified. Additionally, the use of non-food grade silver foils and poor hygienic conditions in the manufacturing units raised serious concerns about the safety standards being followed.
Further, the drive unveiled the widespread use of adulterated ghee and reused cooking oil in the preparation of sweets, which poses a significant risk to consumer health. Retail outlets were not exempt from these violations, with unlabelled and expired food products found on their shelves.
These findings have raised significant concerns about the food safety standards in Telangana, especially during festive seasons when the consumption of such products increases manifold. The government’s initiative to conduct such a massive food safety drive is a significant step towards improving food quality and safety in the state.
The Telangana government has urged all food establishments to adhere strictly to the food safety guidelines and standards. It has also warned of severe penalties for establishments found violating these norms. The government has asserted its commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its citizens and vowed to take all necessary actions to achieve this goal.
The #FoodSafetyTelangana drive is a clear signal of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the citizens of Telangana can enjoy their festivals without worrying about the safety and quality of their food.
