The Telangana High Court has rejected two petitions challenging the state’s decision to allocate 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local elections. These petitions opposed the government’s effort to increase BC representation.
One of the petitions argued that the 42% reservation exceeds the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. Petitioners claimed this would be unfair to other groups in local governance. They referenced both the Supreme Court’s decision and the Panchayat Raj Act, which both emphasize that reservations should not go beyond 50%.
The court hearing on Wednesday revealed the judges’ dissatisfaction with the petitioners’ reliance on newspaper articles. The bench highlighted that such articles do not hold up as credible evidence under Supreme Court standards.
Ultimately, the High Court decided to dismiss both petitions.
