Hyderabad: Authorities in Telangana are cracking down on the misuse of Mephentermine Sulphate injections. These drugs, meant for heart patients, are being illegally sold in gyms in Secunderabad.
The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) received a tip from Karkhana police about unlicensed drug sales. Officials raided a location in Namalagundu, owned by M Naresh, and confiscated 66 vials of cardiac stimulant drugs named Termin and Termiva.
These injections are designed to treat low blood pressure during surgery but have found their way into gyms. Bodybuilders use them to boost endurance and performance, as the drugs increase noradrenaline, enhance heart output, and constrict blood vessels. However, such misuse can lead to severe health issues, including heart problems or even death.
The drugs are sold at inflated prices between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000 per vial. Gym owners and trainers distribute them illegally. There’s also a dangerous practice of reusing needles, which increases the risk of transmitting diseases like HIV. This violates the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with offenders facing up to five years in prison.
DCA Director-General Shahnawaz Qasim emphasized the health risks and insisted that only certified doctors should handle these powerful medications.
Authorities are determined to stop this hazardous trend. More operations are planned to eliminate illegal drug sales in gyms, safeguarding public health and safety.
