Telangana Offers 20% EV Discounts to 5 Lakh Government Employees

Telangana has launched a groundbreaking initiative to provide electric vehicle discounts to government employees, making it the first state in India to implement such a program. The scheme will benefit over 5 lakh government employees across the state, offering them discounts of up to 20 percent on electric vehicles. This move is part of the state government’s comprehensive strategy to promote clean and sustainable mobility under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

Under the new initiative, government employees can save up to ₹4 lakh per family when purchasing electric vehicles. The state government has partnered with leading EV manufacturers including Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Gravton Motors, and Ather Energy to make this program successful. These partnerships will ensure that employees have access to a wide range of electric vehicle options at significantly reduced prices.

Telangana has already implemented 100 percent exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles, making EV ownership more affordable for citizens. The state currently operates 2,800 electric buses in its public transport system, demonstrating its commitment to green mobility. Additionally, the government has announced plans to convert 1 lakh auto-rickshaws into electric vehicles, further expanding the state’s EV ecosystem.

The state is rapidly expanding its charging infrastructure to support the growing number of electric vehicles. Charging stations are being set up from the Secretariat to district levels across Telangana. The government has also called upon malls, hotels, and public spaces to install EV charging facilities, ensuring that electric vehicle owners have convenient access to charging points throughout the state.

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has outlined the government’s vision for this initiative, emphasizing the goals of achieving cleaner air, reducing fuel dependence, and building a green future for Telangana. The minister highlighted that this comprehensive approach to electric vehicle adoption will position Telangana as a leader in sustainable transportation in India.

With the combination of purchase discounts, tax exemptions, and expanding infrastructure, Telangana is creating a robust ecosystem for electric vehicle adoption.
