    Traffic police step up action against drunk driving with 1,300 cases reported

    Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police carried out a large-scale drunk driving check over the weekend as part of their ongoing efforts to stop people from driving under the influence of alcohol. During this drive, 222 people were caught in the Cyberabad area for drunk driving. In total, 1,113 such cases were booked last week across Hyderabad.

    Due to a rise in road accidents caused by drunk driving, the Cyberabad police increased checks in different areas. Special teams were set up to conduct these checks during the weekends. The drive targeted all types of vehicles. Out of the 222 caught in Cyberabad, 163 were riding two-wheelers, 9 were driving three-wheelers, 48 were in cars, and 2 were driving heavy vehicles.

    The police also reported that 18 of the offenders had very high levels of alcohol in their blood, ranging between 200 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. All those caught will be taken to court. The highest number of cases came from Madhapur and Medchal zones, which reported 106 and 117 cases respectively.

    During the drive, police also found instances of underage drinking and driving. While traffic police booked them for drunk driving, the law and order police will investigate where the minors got the alcohol.

    Cyberabad police also warned that anyone caught drunk driving and causing a deadly accident will be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This law treats such cases as a serious crime, similar to homicide, and can lead to a jail term of up to 10 years along with a fine.

    In a separate operation, Hyderabad police also conducted a drive from March 22 to 28. During this period, they caught 1,113 people for drunk driving. Among them, 942 were riding two-wheelers, 48 were driving three-wheelers, and 118 were in cars.

    The police said 61 of these offenders had high blood alcohol content, and some of them were underage. Three were under 18 years old, and 29 were between 18 and 20. The highest number of offenders—462—were between 21 and 33 years old. This was followed by 355 offenders aged 31-40, and 177 aged 41-50.

    The police urged all citizens to avoid drinking and driving, warning that strict action will be taken against those who break the law.
