Hyderabad is experiencing high water levels at its twin reservoirs, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, due to continuous inflows from upstream regions.
To manage the increasing water levels safely, irrigation officials have opened several gates at both reservoirs to release water downstream. At Osman Sagar, the Full Tank Level (FTL) is 1,790 feet (3.900 TMC). Currently, the water level is at 1,789.15 feet (3.705 TMC). With inflows of 1,900 cusecs and outflows of 2,704 cusecs, eight gates have been opened to three feet to maintain balance.
Similarly, Himayat Sagar, which has an FTL of 1,763.50 feet (2.970 TMC), is also receiving steady inflows. Its current level is 1,762.70 feet (2.734 TMC), with 1,200 cusecs of inflow. To manage this, two gates have been opened to three feet, releasing approximately 1,981 cusecs of water. People in low-lying areas downstream have been advised to stay alert as water continues to be discharged.
These reservoirs are vital for Hyderabad’s drinking water and flood control. This season, they have nearly reached full capacity due to ongoing rains in the catchment regions. With Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar maintaining stable levels, the city’s water security remains strong. Officials continue to monitor and manage the water flow carefully.
