Urbanization has disrupted natural habitats for birds, so a new initiative aims to protect them and ensure enough water supply. An artificial floating avian habitat has been set up at Neknampur Lake in Hyderabad by Dhruvansh, a local NGO. This Floating Treatment Wetland helps clean the lake and provide a safe space for birds.

Madhulika Choudhary, head of Dhruvansh, explained that a similar island was established in Ibrahim Bagh Cheruvu in 2018 and saw great success. The new avian habitat at Neknampur Lake aims to attract more birds and enhance biodiversity in the area. The platform is made of materials like styrofoam, bamboo, gunny bags, and coir, with nests hanging from it.

The floating islands require minimal maintenance and have reduced harmful chemicals in the lake by 60%. Aquatic weed growth has also been controlled. The initiative has been successful in promoting biodiversity and protecting birds in the region.
