Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Russia’s private military group Wagner, has criticized the Russian government’s military leadership. He claimed that Russia’s military suffered a humiliating setback in Ukraine when the Russian brigade fled from the eastern city of Bakhmut. Prigozhin accused a Russian military unit of fleeing positions near Bakhmut and said the state was incapable of defending its country. He also criticized Russia’s top military brass on Victory Day for their incompetence. The Wagner Group, which Prigozhin founded in 2014, has become a major player in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.

Prigozhin has been making provocative statements on his Telegram channels, accusing Moscow’s top generals of trying to deceive President Putin over the Kremlin’s Ukraine campaign. He claims that soldiers are fleeing because of the stupidity of Russian army commanders, who he says are giving criminal orders. He also accused senior Russian officials of starving his troops of shells and suggested that they were dithering while Wagner fighters died. However, he later clarified that he was referring to the former Defense Minister Deputy Mikhail Mizintsev or Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

Prigozhin has been known as Putin’s chef and is considered close to the Russian President. However, he has recently been publicly criticizing Russia’s military leadership, which is unusual for someone in his position. He said that the situation on the western flanks is developing according to the worst of the predicted scenarios. Those territories that were liberated with the blood and lives of our comrades are abandoned today almost without any fight by those who are supposed to hold our flanks.
