Hyderabad is experiencing relentless heavy rain due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for severe rainfall until Sunday. The city is facing major flooding and traffic issues, disrupting daily activities. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has moved 55 people from risky areas to safer places.
The rain started on Thursday night, causing problems, especially in low-lying areas. Many families lost sleep as water flooded their homes. On Friday morning, commuters, especially in the IT areas, faced difficulties as streets turned into rivers, leading to heavy traffic. Many sought shelter in Metro Rail stations, which were crowded with office workers and others.
Authorities, including GHMC, Hyderabad Road Development Corporation (HYDRAA), and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), are working to clear drains and manage traffic. Affected areas include Dilsukhnagar, LB Nagar, and IT zones like Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Manikonda.
At Koti ENT Hospital, nearly three feet of water entered, disrupting operations. Overflowing drains caused silt to pile up inside, challenging staff and patients.
The release of excess water from Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar has worsened flooding along the Musi River. Areas like Moosa Nagar, Padma Nagar, and Shanker Nagar were hit hard, prompting evacuations. Authorities closed Jiyaguda road and lower bridges at Chaderghat and Moosarambagh for safety. Barricades were placed at Moosarambagh and Puranapul bridges.
The GHMC quickly relocated 55 people from flood-prone areas near Shivaji Bridge and Bhoo Laxmi Temple. They received temporary shelter, food, and medical aid at Gode-ki-khabar GHMC Community Hall. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan is overseeing the situation, ensuring officials stay alert.
On Friday, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy instructed officials to be ready and address waterlogging and traffic swiftly. By 9 pm, Telangana Development Planning Society noted Barkas Chandrayangutta had the most rain with 60.8 mm, followed by Indiranagar comm hall with 56.8 mm, and GHMC Zonal Office Charminar with 51.3 mm.
The forecast predicts moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with winds of 40 to 50 KMPH, for Friday and Saturday. This may cause more water accumulation on roads. Cyberabad police advise IT firms to consider remote work to reduce traffic. Residents should stay cautious, limit travel, and follow official weather updates.
