The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has given a major fillip to the Musi River Rejuvenation project by agreeing in principle to provide substantial financial support for the ambitious initiative. The development marks a significant step forward in the state government’s efforts to transform the historic river and its surrounding areas.
The multilateral funding agency has committed a loan amount of ₹4,100 crore (approximately $500 million) specifically for Phase 1 of the project. This funding is expected to be disbursed by March 2026, providing the necessary financial backbone for the initial phase of the river rejuvenation work.
The project follows a structured cost-sharing model involving multiple stakeholders. The ADB loan will cover 50 percent of the total project cost. The Central Government will contribute 25 percent as a grant under the Urban Challenge Fund. The remaining 25 percent will be invested by the Telangana State Government.
The sanctioned funds are earmarked specifically for Zone 1 of the project, which covers a 21-kilometer stretch extending from Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar to Bapu Ghat. This zone represents a critical section of the river that passes through important areas of the state capital.
The Musi River Front Project aims to rejuvenate the river, improve water quality, develop infrastructure along the riverbanks, and create recreational spaces for citizens. The project is expected to address environmental concerns while also boosting urban development in areas adjacent to the river.
The tripartite funding arrangement ensures shared responsibility among international, national, and state-level agencies. The ADB’s involvement brings international expertise and financial resources to the project, while the Central Government’s participation through the Urban Challenge Fund reflects the project’s national significance. The Telangana Government’s investment demonstrates the state’s commitment to transforming the Musi River corridor.
