The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has come under intense scrutiny following its decision to expel Telangana MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig with immediate effect. The action, taken on the late night of 28 August 2026, has sparked widespread controversy as opposition parties demand transparency regarding the reasons behind the sudden dismissal of the prominent leader.
The official expulsion notice issued by Joint Secretary S.A. Hussain Anwar directed Baig to resign from the Telangana Legislative Council but provided no specific explanation for the action. Party insiders have cited “indiscipline” as the cause, though the vague reasoning has done little to quell mounting questions. The move came shortly after reports emerged of a viral video controversy and Baig’s complaint to Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police alleging blackmail through deepfake videos and morphed photographs. At the time of the complaint, Baig was reportedly in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah.
Social media platforms have been flooded with unverified claims linking Baig to various serious allegations, including sexual offences, land disputes, intimidation tactics, and an alleged incident involving a minor. However, police authorities have not released any details about the video in question, and the investigation into the cyber complaint remains ongoing. The lack of official information has created a vacuum filled by speculation and unconfirmed reports.
BJP Telangana State President N. Ramchander Rao described the sexual harassment allegations as serious and called for a comprehensive probe covering both current and past incidents. In comments reported by NTV Telugu, he demanded strict action and argued that party expulsion cannot substitute for criminal investigation when allegations involve women or minors. The BJP has pressed for a court-monitored or CBI inquiry into the matter. Party spokesperson N.V. Subash raised questions about the timing of Baig’s cyber complaint in relation to his expulsion.
Goshamahal BJP MLA T. Raja Singh questioned why Baig was recalled from Umrah and instructed to resign at midnight. He stated that Hyderabad’s Muslim community deserves an explanation from Asaduddin Owaisi regarding the sudden action against a previously prominent party member. Singh referenced the unverified social media claims and asked whether other AIMIM leaders faced similar allegations.
Salman Khan, president of Hyderabad Youth Courage and associated with the BRS, alleged that an AIMIM MLA and a former corporator were also linked to the controversy. He demanded that Owaisi publicly explain the expulsion rather than acting quietly behind closed doors. BJYM’s Nitin Nandekar echoed similar calls for disclosure of the actual reasons behind the expulsion.
Baig, who was elected unopposed in 2023 from the Hyderabad Local Authorities seat with earlier BRS backing, had not publicly responded to the allegations in early reports. The Legislative Council Chairman had not received any resignation from Baig at the time of initial coverage. Police investigation into the cyber complaint continues as opposition parties use the midnight expulsion and AIMIM’s silence to question the party’s internal accountability standards.
