Expelled AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig has refused to resign from his Telangana Legislative Council seat following his expulsion from the party. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) expelled Baig with immediate effect on August 28, 2026, and directed him to step down from his position. However, Baig has maintained that he has done nothing wrong and will not submit his resignation.

AIMIM Joint Secretary S.A. Hussain Anwar announced the expulsion late on August 28 without specifying official reasons, stating Baig must immediately submit his resignation to the Chairman of the Legislative Council. The action followed Baig’s complaint to Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police around August 27 alleging unidentified persons were blackmailing him and threatening to release deepfake or morphed photos and videos unless he paid money. Police registered a case on that complaint and investigations are currently ongoing. Baig has maintained that the materials circulating online are fabricated using deepfake technology.
Unverified social media claims and statements by BJP leaders alleged involvement in sexual misconduct or assault of a minor girl, with some reports claiming he was caught red-handed. However, police stated no formal complaint of sexual misconduct had been received and they had no confirmed video of such an incident. AIMIM has not publicly detailed the grounds for expulsion beyond general references to indiscipline in some insider comments.
Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao alleged assault of a minor and questioned why action came late. He criticized Congress and BRS for their silence, noting they had supported Baig’s election, and demanded a thorough probe and legal action. Other BJP leaders called for a CBI inquiry into the matter. Congress leaders sought transparency from AIMIM on whether proper notice was given before the expulsion.
