Hyderabad – Tech giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a strategic framework agreement with the Telangana government to invest $7 billion (over Rs 63,000 crore) over the next 14 years for a massive expansion of its cloud data centre infrastructure in the state.
The announcement comes just a day after Amazon revealed its broader plan to pump $35 billion into India, signaling the company’s growing confidence in the country’s digital infrastructure market.
This latest investment commitment marks a significant escalation from Amazon’s previous announcements in the state. The company first entered Telangana in 2020 with an initial investment of $2.7 billion to establish its data centre region in Hyderabad.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, which was inaugurated in 2022, became AWS’s second data centre region in India after Mumbai. At the time of inauguration, Amazon upgraded its investment commitment to $4.4 billion by 2030 for expanding its cloud infrastructure footprint in Telangana.
The new $7 billion investment represents a substantial increase over previous commitments, reflecting Amazon’s long-term vision for the state as a major cloud computing hub in South Asia.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy welcomed the investment, stating that it demonstrates the confidence global investors have in the state’s governance and business environment.
“The scale of this commitment reflects the trust investors now place in our governance, stability, and long-term vision to propel Telangana to the $3 trillion economy goal. This is Telangana Rising 2047 in action,” said the Chief Minister.
The strategic framework agreement outlines Amazon’s plans to significantly expand its cloud infrastructure capabilities in the state over the coming years. The investment is expected to create numerous employment opportunities and strengthen Telangana’s position as a leading technology destination in India.
Cloud data centres are critical infrastructure for modern digital services, supporting everything from streaming platforms and mobile applications to enterprise software and artificial intelligence systems. The expansion will enable AWS to better serve its growing customer base across India and the Asia Pacific region.
Telangana has emerged as a preferred destination for technology investments, with its capital Hyderabad already hosting major global tech companies and serving as a significant IT and business services hub.
The state government has been actively working to attract large-scale technology investments through business-friendly policies and robust infrastructure development initiatives.
Amazon’s expanded commitment is part of the state’s broader ambition to achieve a $3 trillion economy by 2047, aligning with India’s centenary of independence.
