Bhongir Fort in Telangana is set to become a major tourist attraction with an ambitious development project worth ₹56.81 crore under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. The centerpiece of this transformation is a 1-km ropeway designed to transport 250 to 300 visitors per hour from the base to the hilltop fort. Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao recently reviewed the progress of the works and expressed dissatisfaction over the delays, directing officials to complete the entire project by October 2.
The ropeway project, valued at ₹17.91 crore, forms a crucial part of the Bhongir Fort Experiential Zone. The system spans 1,020 metres in length and covers an elevation difference of approximately 180 metres. Built using the advanced Monocable Jig Back System, the ropeway will feature 6 passenger cabins along with 1 standby cabin, each capable of accommodating 6 passengers. The system is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 6 metres per second, ensuring smooth and efficient transportation for tourists visiting the historic fort.
Beyond the ropeway, the comprehensive development plan includes extensive infrastructure improvements to enhance visitor experience. The project will introduce 20 electric vehicles for convenient transportation within the fort premises. New parking facilities and approach roads are being constructed to handle the expected increase in tourist footfall. A modern cafeteria and food kiosks will cater to visitors’ refreshment needs, while a specially designed viewing gallery will offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The development also emphasizes the historical and cultural significance of Bhongir Fort. An interpretation centre is being established to educate visitors about the fort’s rich history and heritage. The project includes the restoration of heritage structures within the fort complex, ensuring that the historical integrity of the site is preserved while making it more accessible to modern tourists. Water bodies around the fort area are being beautified as part of the landscaping efforts.
Infrastructure enhancements extend to improved connectivity and safety features throughout the fort premises. New pathways and restored steps will make navigation easier for visitors of all ages. The entire fort area will be illuminated with decorative lighting, creating an attractive ambiance during evening hours. A comprehensive CCTV surveillance system and public announcement system will ensure visitor safety and efficient crowd management. Additional amenities include toilets, seating areas, and other essential facilities designed to provide comfort and convenience to tourists.
The Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme aims to transform Bhongir Fort into a world-class tourist destination while preserving its historical character. The fort, known for its unique rock formation and strategic hilltop location, has long been a site of historical importance in Telangana. With the October 2 deadline set by Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, officials are working to expedite the remaining construction and installation work to meet the target completion date.
