The Congress party claimed credit for the construction of the Ram Mandir at the site of the former Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. They stated that the grand old party played a significant role in paving the way for the temple’s construction.
Congress MLC Jeevan Reddy spoke to the media at Gandhi Bhavan and criticized Prime Minister Modi’s statements about the Ram Mandir. He highlighted that it was former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who opened the gates of the Babri Masjid in 1986 and performed Silanyas for the Ram Temple in 1989. Reddy mentioned that even the permission for laying the foundation was given by Rajiv Gandhi.
Reddy expressed his belief that if Rajiv Gandhi had remained alive, the temple’s construction would have been completed during his lifetime. He also pointed out how Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as PM saw an increase in religious fervor related to Lord Ram and Krishna due to shows like Ramayana and Mahabharata on Doordarshan.
Reddy questioned the BJP’s attempts to take credit for everything and reminded them that it was the Supreme Court that allowed the construction of the temple. He emphasized that Rajiv Gandhi drew inspiration from Lord Rama as a just administrator.
