A group of Congress MLAs, led by Mahbubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy, met with the DGP to demand accountability for police officers involved in a recent incident. They asked for a thorough investigation, including questioning of all suspects, including a former minister.
The MLAs also requested the investigation to look into call data records and surveillance equipment used during the election period. They expressed concerns about reports of threatening calls and surveillance on personal mobile phones in Mahabubnagar from 2018 to 2023.
According to the MLA, data gathered from tapped phones showed that citizens in Mahabubnagar faced intimidation and distress from the former minister and police officials. Some had to close their businesses and move their families to Hyderabad due to this.
The MLA emphasized that unauthorized interception of private communications violates privacy rights and democratic principles. The PCC senior vice president questioned the use of advanced technology from Israel for tapping opponents’ phones by the government.
