Hyderabad: On Sunday, fish markets in the city were crowded with people eager to buy fish for ‘Mrigasira Karte’, a day believed to be special for eating fish at the start of the monsoon. Seeing the high demand, sellers raised prices by 20%.
The markets were lively with customers purchasing large amounts of fish on this public holiday. Rohu and Catla were popular choices, but Murrel was especially favored by wealthier buyers. Typically priced at Rs 450 per kilogram, Murrel soared to Rs 600 due to the high demand.
Traders reported that over 10,000 kg of fish were sold citywide on this day. Ramnagar market, the largest in the area, opened early, drawing both wholesalers and individual buyers eager for their preferred fish types.
Fish cleaners were also busy, charging Rs 50 per kilogram for their services. Some workers even traveled from nearby districts to the city’s markets, eager to earn well on this profitable day.
