Investigators have cracked the Secunderabad armoury heist case with four suspects now in custody, eleven days after weapons and ammunition vanished from the Madras Regiment armoury at Bollarum in Secunderabad Cantonment. The breakthrough came through a coordinated operation conducted by Military Intelligence and the Telangana police Task Force. Among the detained individuals, one person is from Nagarkurnool while three others are from different locations. All four suspects are currently being interrogated about their specific roles in stealing, transporting and hiding the military weapons.
A retired Army officer is suspected to be the mastermind behind this audacious theft, according to sources familiar with the investigation. Authorities are examining evidence suggesting that this former officer harbored a personal grudge against his previous commanding officer and orchestrated the entire operation to cause problems for him. A significant portion of the stolen arsenal has been recovered from Nagarkurnool district based on information gathered during questioning. Officials are now matching the recovered firearms, ammunition and other items against the official armoury inventory records. The exact count of recovered weapons and confirmation of whether all missing items have been found will be disclosed after complete verification.
The theft was discovered at approximately 7.50am on August 31 when military personnel found the armoury door open and locks on weapon storage boxes broken. The weapons had been physically verified and accounted for at 6pm on August 30, indicating the theft occurred during the night hours. A total of twelve firearms were reported missing, including four AK-203 assault rifles, one INSAS rifle and seven pistols, along with ammunition. The Bollaram police registered a case under Sections 331(4) and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following the discovery.
Investigators had initially suspected an insider operation due to the restricted nature of access to the high-security armoury facility. The complexity of removing weapons and ammunition weighing nearly 40 kilograms without drawing attention also pointed toward internal involvement. The timing of the theft raised additional concerns as the main battalion unit, including its commanding officer, had traveled to Pokhran in Rajasthan for field firing exercises when the security breach was detected. This absence of senior personnel may have created an opportunity for the perpetrators to execute their plan.
During the investigation phase, authorities questioned multiple Army personnel including guards, Agniveers and officers responsible for armoury supervision and security. The probe revealed significant security lapses at the facility. Investigators discovered that CCTV cameras positioned near the armoury were switched off during night hours, eliminating any video evidence of the theft. Additionally, the facility lacked an anti-burglary alarm system, which would have typically alerted security personnel to any unauthorized entry or tampering with the armoury.
The suspects had not been formally shown as arrested in official records until the latest reports emerged. The joint investigation team continues to verify all recovered items and examine the full extent of the conspiracy. Military and police officials are working to determine if additional individuals were involved in planning or executing the theft from the high-security military installation. The case has raised serious questions about security protocols at defense establishments and the screening procedures for personnel with access to weapons storage facilities.
