The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has switched from using Aadhaar biometric attendance to an artificial intelligence-based facial recognition system for managing the attendance of its sanitation staff. This change has proven to be cost-effective, saving the corporation approximately Rs 1.25 crore annually.

The pilot project for the facial recognition system was implemented with the sanitation staff in Karwan and is now being used in other departments as well. The yearly cost of the facial recognition system is Rs 67.08 lakh, significantly lower than the Rs 1.92 crore spent on the Aadhaar biometric system.

GHMC introduced the facial recognition system to create a more efficient and cost-effective attendance mechanism to replace the previous biometric system. The new system aims to address challenges faced by officers, such as authentication issues with fingerprint scans and network connectivity problems.

The facial recognition system eliminates the need for additional devices and network dependencies, ensuring 100% accurate and tamper-proof attendance records. Following positive feedback from the pilot project, the system has been implemented across all of GHMC.

This system uses artificial intelligence to verify changes in facial features and incorporates liveness detection for added security. Staff members must undergo a two-step registration process involving capturing their face and Aadhaar card details before their attendance can be recorded. Officers can view these registrations at any time through their logins.
