Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court criticized the Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGSPDCL) for not recovering a huge electricity debt from GITAM University in Sangareddy. This debt, amounting to Rs. 118.13 crores, has been accumulating for nearly 20 years.
The university had filed a request to pause the payment demand issued by TGSPDCL in September 2025. Justice Nagesh Bheemapaka expressed frustration over the officials’ lack of action in dealing with this large default.
Usually, electricity is cut off for regular consumers if they delay payment by just a month. However, GITAM University has not paid since 2008-09, allowing debts to grow for almost two decades. The court questioned why the university received special treatment and why its power supply wasn’t disconnected despite the overdue payments.
Justice Bheemapaka has summoned the SE of TGSPDCL to appear in court on December 22. The official must explain why electricity continued to be supplied without payment and why the university hasn’t faced stricter action.
N Sreedhar Reddy, representing TGSPDCL, stated that the university avoided paying bills through repeated lawsuits. In 2020, the university filed a similar case, obtained a temporary halt on payments, and later withdrew without paying. This current case seems to be another attempt to delay payment. The court has postponed proceedings to December 22 and requested the presence of the senior official to ensure proper handling of the situation.
