The Telangana state government has approved Rs 33 crore to waive loans for handloom workers. This effort will assist 5,691 workers across Telangana under the Handloom Weavers Scheme.
Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao stated that loans, including principal and interest up to Rs 1 lakh, taken for handloom activities between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2024, will be waived. The waiver applies to loans from all banks and District Cooperative Central Banks.
Verification of eligible workers will occur district by district. Once verified, the waiver amount will be credited to their accounts. The Minister also mentioned that workers can receive new loans up to the same limit post-waiver.
Since the Congress took office, Rs 920 crore has been allocated for handloom workers. Government departments must purchase textiles from TGCO, leading to orders worth Rs 579 crore.
Initiatives like the Indira Mahila Shakti Saree Scheme ensure ongoing work for 16,000 weavers in Sircilla. Additionally, Rs 193 crore supports the Handloom Abhayahastam Scheme, and Rs 290 crore owed by the previous government has been paid through the Netannaku Cheyutha Scheme.
