Hyderabad: The Government of Telangana has paused plans for the Kumurambheem Conservation Reserve. This decision was announced by the Environment, Forests, Science & Technology (EFS&T) Department on Monday.
The reserve aimed to link the Kawal Tiger Reserve in Telangana with the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, creating an essential corridor for tigers. The project, meant to boost tiger conservation and improve habitat links, was initially approved on May 30, 2025, under Government Order Ms. No. 49. However, after a recommendation from the District Collector of Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, the EFS&T Department has paused the project.
Ahmad Nadeem, Principal Secretary to the Government, issued the suspension following concerns from the district. The state is reviewing the corridor’s operational and administrative impacts.
The Collector’s letter from July 11, 2025, possibly highlighted concerns about land use, tribal rights, or ecological issues.
Conservation experts stress that while connecting protected areas is crucial for tiger populations, plans must also address local socio-economic issues and involve community participation.
