The Telangana Legislative Assembly witnessed a significant development as Minister Ponnam Prabhakar introduced a crucial bill aimed at curbing hate speech on social media platforms. The proposed legislation seeks to address the growing concern of inflammatory content that targets communities based on caste or religion, which has been causing communal tensions and hurting public sentiments across the state.

The bill specifically targets content posted on social media that insults or demeans communities on the basis of their caste or religion. The legislation aims to create a legal framework that holds individuals accountable for spreading hatred and divisive content online. This move comes at a time when social media platforms have become a breeding ground for inflammatory posts that often lead to real-world conflicts and communal disharmony.

Under the proposed legislation, offenders found guilty of posting hate speech on social media could face stringent punishment. The bill proposes imprisonment ranging from one to seven years depending on the severity of the offense. This graduated penalty structure is designed to ensure that the punishment is proportionate to the harm caused by the hate content.

In addition to the jail term, the bill also mandates a monetary fine of ₹50,000 for those convicted under this law. The dual penalty system of imprisonment and fine is intended to serve as a strong deterrent against individuals who misuse social media platforms to spread hatred and create divisions in society. The financial penalty also aims to provide some form of compensation for the victims affected by such hateful content.
