The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant delay in the construction bidding process for the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR) project. The bid opening for the northern half of the ambitious infrastructure project has been postponed to 24th September 2026, marking a shift in the project timeline that was eagerly anticipated by residents and stakeholders across the region.
The NHAI has strategically divided the 6-lane access-controlled greenfield ring road project into two distinct sections to facilitate better planning and execution. The northern half spans 161.5 kilometers and is currently under the bidding process, while the southern half covers a longer stretch of 183 kilometers. This division aims to streamline the construction and management of what will be one of the largest ring road projects in the country.
A major development in the project’s progress is the finalization of the alignment for the southern half of the Regional Ring Road. With the alignment now confirmed, authorities are preparing to initiate the land acquisition process and tendering procedures for this section. This milestone represents a crucial step forward in bringing the complete ring road project closer to reality, despite the delay in the northern section’s bidding process.
The Hyderabad Regional Ring Road is designed to serve as a critical infrastructure solution for the growing metropolitan area. The primary objective of this greenfield project is to completely divert through traffic away from Hyderabad, thereby addressing the increasing congestion problems faced by the city. The ring road will also significantly reduce the traffic burden on the existing Outer Ring Road (ORR), which has been experiencing heavy vehicular movement in recent years.
Once completed, the RRR will form a comprehensive network around the Hyderabad metropolitan region, spanning a total distance of approximately 344.5 kilometers when both sections are combined. The access-controlled nature of the highway will ensure smooth traffic flow and improved connectivity to various districts surrounding the state capital. The project is expected to boost economic development in the peripheral areas while providing much-needed relief to the city’s congested road network.
