Hyderabad Annual Tree Biodiversity Survey: A Call for Volunteers

WWF-India is inviting nature lovers and concerned citizens to join the second edition of the Hyderabad Annual Tree (HAT) Biodiversity Survey. The event will take place on March 9, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. This initiative is part of WWF-India’s Citizen Science programme, which encourages people to engage with urban biodiversity by studying trees and wildlife in the city.

Unlike regular surveys, this programme focuses on community participation. Volunteers will explore different streets and parks across Hyderabad’s six zones, documenting the various plants and animals they find. The collected information will help scientists understand the importance of trees as homes for many species.

Participants will record important details about each tree, such as its species name, diameter, and whether it is flowering or fruiting. They will also note any interactions between the trees and wildlife, including birds, insects, and other animals. This activity aims to help people appreciate the greenery in Hyderabad and its role in supporting biodiversity.

Farida Tampal, WWF-India’s State Director, highlighted that the survey is not just about collecting data but also about encouraging people to take an active role in protecting nature. She explained that by directly engaging with the environment, volunteers will gain a better understanding of the city’s ecological balance and the need to preserve it.

Those interested in participating can register online by filling out a form at http://bit.ly/3Xra3BT. They can also contact WWF-India at 8074419076 or email sakbar@wwfindia.net for more details. As environmental concerns grow in cities, events like these help promote awareness and encourage conservation efforts.
