Hyderabad: Woman Develops Guillain-Barré Syndrome After Pune Outbreak

Text Size: 100%

A woman from Siddipet, Hyderabad, has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This is believed to be the first reported case in the city after an outbreak of the condition in Pune.

The woman is currently in critical condition and is on a ventilator. GBS is a rare medical condition that leads to muscle weakness and numbness. It usually develops two to six weeks after a person has experienced an infection. The illness often follows a severe bacterial or viral infection that weakens the immune system.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has commented on the situation, stating that the exact reason behind the recent rise in GBS cases in Pune is still unknown. However, the organization has assured the public that this increase is unlikely to result in an epidemic. It is also important to note that most people diagnosed with GBS recover fully with appropriate treatment.
