The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that normal rainfall will occur in August and September. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the director general of IMD, stated that the rainfall is expected to be between 94 and 99 percent during these two months. However, the eastern and northeastern regions may experience less rainfall than normal.

The decrease in rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season is due to El Nino. In June, there was a 9 percent deficit in rainfall across the country, while in July, there was a 13 percent excess. This July also marked the lowest rainfall in the eastern and northeastern regions since 1901. The country experienced 1113 heavy rains and 205 very heavy rains in July, which is the highest in the last five years according to Mrityunjaya.
