Kothagudem: Eight cooling towers at the old Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) have been demolished. The KTPS is located in Paloncha, in the district.
The power plant was shut down a few years ago. The parts that produced power were already taken down and their debris was removed. However, the cooling towers’ demolition was delayed because of the election rules during the Assembly elections.
A company named HR Commercial got the contract to demolish the towers for Rs 485 crore. This contract was awarded a few months back by Genco.
Earlier, in February, the taller cooling towers, which were 100 and 120 meters high, were already demolished. The eight cooling towers were originally built between 1965 and 1978 to help generate 720 MW of power at the A, B, and C power stations.
