Tribal Women Meet KTR, Share Ordeal of Police Brutality
A group of tribal women from Lagacharla, who belong to farmers’ families, met BRS working president KT Rama Rao at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday. The women were deeply emotional as they recounted the harsh treatment their family members received from the police.
Earlier, these women addressed a press conference at Somajiguda Press Club before coming to Telangana Bhavan. While speaking to them, KT Rama Rao accused Revanth Reddy’s government of conspiring to take away the lands of poor farmers by politicizing the situation in Lagacharla. He explained that the farmers were protesting because they were losing their lands, but instead of addressing their concerns, they were met with severe police brutality.
The tribal women shared heartbreaking stories about how the men in their families were mistreated. One of the women, Jyoti, who is pregnant, broke down while describing how her husband was beaten and taken away by the police, despite having no involvement in the incident. The women said that they had been facing threats for nearly ten months, as officials pressured them to give up their lands. They expressed fear that their land would be taken away no matter what.
KTR expressed his anger and concern, asking, “Look at these tribal women. Do they seem like attackers if someone provokes them?” He criticized the government for failing to explain the benefits of establishing a pharmaceutical village in the area. KTR assured the women that the BRS party would support them until their family members, who had been arrested, were released. He also promised that medical assistance would be provided to Jyoti.
Additionally, KTR announced that he would take the group of women to Delhi to meet the National Human Rights Commission to demand an investigation into the police’s brutal actions against the farmers in Lagacharla.
