Hyderabad: The Urology team at NIMS (Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences) has achieved a major milestone by completing 1,000 kidney transplants over the past 10 years. This marks an important moment in their kidney transplant program.
NIMS doctors revealed that for the past decade, the team has been performing over 100 kidney transplants each year, showing their strong dedication to saving lives. The NIMS kidney transplant program, which began in 1989, has become a source of hope for many patients in the region. After the Jeevandan cadaver transplantation program was introduced, the number of transplants increased rapidly. Since 2015, the team has completed 1,000 transplants, including many for children. In total, NIMS has now performed 1,730 kidney transplants, with over 1,200 of these surgeries taking place after 2012.
These surgeries were provided for free under the Aarogyasri Health Scheme, which is funded by the Telangana government. So far this year, the team has conducted 101 kidney transplants — 55 from living donors and 46 from deceased donors. Besides transplants, the team also performs over 900 to 1,000 other urological procedures every month. These include surgeries for kidney stones, prostate problems, cancer, reconstructive urology, robotic surgeries, and surgeries for children.
The urology team is led by Professor and Head of Department Dr. Rahul Devraj. Other key members of the team include senior Professor Dr. Ram Reddy, Dr. Vidyasagar, Dr. Ramachandraiah, Dr. Raghuveer, Dr. Charan Kumar, Dr. Dheeraj, Dr. Vishnu, Dr. Janaki, Dr. Harsha, Dr. Pavan, Dr. Suraj Kumar, Dr. Poovarasan, Dr. Shahrukh, Dr. Anant, Dr. Rakesh, Dr. Abhishek, Dr. Anupama, Dr. Madhusudhan, Dr. Nishant, Dr. Tagore, Dr. Srujan, and Dr. Veda Prakesh.
