Hyderabad – The State Special Secretary for the Energy Department, Sandeep Kumar Sultania, has directed power agencies to strengthen the electricity transmission system to handle growing demand over the next five years.

During a review meeting, officials from TGSPDCL presented a detailed action plan outlining how electricity needs are rising across industrial, residential, and other sectors in the southern districts of Telangana.

According to Sultania, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) had earlier estimated that Telangana’s peak power demand for the financial year 2025 would be 16,877 megawatts (MW). However, the state has already crossed that number, recording an actual peak of 17,162 MW—well above expectations.

Looking ahead, the CEA estimates that demand in 2026 will reach 18,138 MW. But based on past trends, officials believe the actual figure could go even higher—possibly between 19,000 and 19,500 MW. Sultania emphasized the urgent need to upgrade the power grid to handle this rapid growth.

Power demand is also surging in specific areas around Greater Hyderabad. Zones like Ibrahim Bagh, Gachibowli, Pathan Cheru, Kandukur, and Medchal have seen electricity usage jump by as much as 20%. To meet this spike, the region’s electricity infrastructure must grow by nearly 40%, officials said.

The state is also preparing for a boom in electric vehicles (EVs). With more people expected to shift to EVs, the government plans to install 6,000 public charging stations by 2030. Agencies like TGREDCO and DISCOMs are already working on building these EV charging points across Telangana.

Key officials, including TGSPDCL CMD Musharraf Farooqui and TRANSCO JMD Srinivasa Rao, attended the meeting to discuss these critical infrastructure upgrades.
