Only a few buildings around the world have been given the legal protection of a registered trademark. Famous examples include the Empire State Building in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House. Now, Osmania University’s Arts College has joined this elite group. On April 19, 2025, it became only the third building in India to receive trademark status.
The official trademark certificate was handed over during a ceremony on the same day. Vice-Chancellor Kumar Molugaram accepted it from Subhajit Saha, who is the founder of the intellectual property firm Resolute4IP. With this recognition, the Arts College now stands alongside two other famous Indian buildings—the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai and the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The Arts College building was constructed in the 1930s and is known for its unique Indo-Saracenic architecture. Its large domes, beautifully carved arches, and open porticos are now legally protected. This means that no one can use the building’s image or design for commercial purposes without permission.
Getting a trademark does more than just protect the building’s design. It also raises Osmania University’s status internationally. The Arts College, which has been home to many students and teachers over the years, is now also a valuable symbol of the university’s history. Experts say this trademark could lead to new opportunities, such as official merchandise and partnerships using the image of the iconic building.
By securing a trademark for the Arts College, Osmania University is showing its dedication to preserving cultural landmarks. This move ensures that the building’s beauty and meaning will be protected for future generations.
