New Delhi, July 25: In one of the most significant administrative actions since the National Testing Agency (NTA) was established in 2017, the Centre has initiated a sweeping restructuring of the country’s premier examination body, removing 47 officials as part of a comprehensive overhaul aimed at restoring public confidence in India’s competitive examination system. The move follows months of scrutiny over alleged irregularities and paper leak controversies that triggered nationwide protests and renewed calls for accountability.
According to government sources, the restructuring is intended to improve transparency, strengthen institutional accountability and modernise the conduct of high-stakes entrance examinations such as NEET-UG, JEE Main, CUET and UGC-NET. Alongside the removal of the officials, the NTA has announced plans to recruit four General Managers and sixteen Young Professionals with expertise in cybersecurity, forensic investigation, assessment research and examination centre operations. The specialised appointments are expected to enhance the agency’s technological capabilities and reduce the risk of future examination irregularities.
Officials indicated that the action is part of a broader reform agenda designed to make the examination process more secure and transparent. Internal investigations are reportedly underway, and some of the removed officials could face further disciplinary or legal proceedings depending on the findings of ongoing inquiries. The government is also reviewing outsourcing practices and operational protocols followed during the conduct of national entrance examinations.
The reforms come against the backdrop of sustained protests by student organisations and civil society groups demanding greater accountability after the alleged NEET paper leak controversy. The issue sparked widespread concern among students and parents, with many questioning the integrity of India’s entrance examination system. Protesters have urged the government to implement structural reforms that ensure fairness, transparency and merit-based evaluation for millions of aspirants appearing in national-level examinations each year.
Education experts have welcomed the government’s decision, describing it as a significant step towards rebuilding trust in the NTA. They, however, emphasised that administrative changes must be accompanied by long-term institutional reforms, including stronger digital security infrastructure, independent audits, improved invigilator training and stricter monitoring mechanisms at examination centres.
The Ministry of Education is expected to unveil additional measures in the coming weeks as part of its wider examination reform initiative. With millions of students relying on the NTA for admissions to higher educational institutions, the success of the restructuring will be closely watched by aspirants, parents and academic institutions across the country.
