A parking garage collapsed in Lower Manhattan, New York City on Tuesday. Aerial footage on social media showed cars piled on top of each other in a jumble of cracked concrete. One person died and four were taken to the hospital. The building on Ann Street “pancaked, collapsed, all the way to the cellar floor,” said Kazimir Vilenchik, acting head of New York’s buildings department. The exterior of the building remained standing, but officials were concerned about further collapse. The fire department ordered all initial responders out of the building, but a robotics unit was deployed to search inside. Six workers were believed to have been in the building when it collapsed, and one person refused medical treatment. New Yorkers were advised to avoid the area.
