Hyderabad Police Investigate Illegal Online Betting Apps

The Punjagutta police have started an investigation into illegal online betting apps. This comes after a complaint raised concerns about their growing influence on young people and working professionals.

Vinay Vangala, a 40-year-old private employee from Matrushrinagar, filed the complaint. He noticed that students at a training institute in Ameerpet were frequently discussing these betting platforms. He was especially worried about how these apps are widely promoted on social media, making gambling more tempting and risky for young adults.

Mr. Vangala admitted that he himself was almost drawn into using one of these apps. However, he decided against it after his family warned him about the dangers. In his complaint, he provided the police with details about social media influencers who were allegedly promoting these betting applications. He also gave information about their online activities and the names of the apps involved.

Based on the complaint, the Punjagutta police have registered a case under various legal sections, including Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 3, 3A, and 4 of the Gaming Act, and Section 66D of the IT Act. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the role of digital platforms and influencers in promoting illegal gambling.
