Following a two-day break, the Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed in Chhattisgarh this Sunday where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held two roadshows – one each in Raigarh and Sakti districts of the state, as he embarks on his journey to cover over 500 km during his Manipur to Mumbai Yatra.

During his show in Sakti District, Gandhi promised to hold a caste census, if his party got elected.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the lack of provisions for OBCs, and describing the caste census as a pivotal step towards delivering social justice in the country, Mr. Gandhi said he was adamant about conducting it in the country and working for the betterment of the backward classes.

“He [Mr. Modi] is not an OBC and he will never work for OBC, backward and poor. This is the truth. And I have made up my mind that the caste census is the next biggest step towards social justice and I will do it. I am not going to let go,” he said.

Explaining the objective behind the caste census, he said, “The OBCs have the highest population but we do not know their numbers. The top 1% are ruling the country and the rest are getting nothing. First, we will do the caste census and then find out who has how much wealth. We will find out the number of Adivasis and how much wealth they own. Then we will find out the number of rich and poor in the country in the general category… It will be clear how much money Adani has and how much a common man has. Narendra Modi does not want this. This will change Indian politics completely.”

At Raigarh, he said his party wanted an India where hatred and violence did not exist, adding that love is in the DNA of the country.
He further criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for spreading hate, and the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over strife-torn Manipur.

The Congress leader also questioned the Agniveer scheme and promised to fight for the 1.5 lakh candidates who were selected for the army from 2019-2021 but were not recruited. He assured the public that these candidates will either get compensation or recruitment.
The Congress leader further highlighted the disparity caused by policies like GST and demonetization, stating that it was detrimental and deepened the disparities between the rich and the poor, as the rich and the poor have to pay the same GST even if their earnings vastly differ.
