Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana, replacing the current incumbent. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader will soon take charge at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. This appointment brings decades of political and administrative experience to the state’s constitutional head position.
The current Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been transferred and appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra. Varma assumed office as Telangana Governor in July 2024 and served the state for several months before this transfer. His tenure, though brief, marked an important period in the state’s governance.
Shiv Pratap Shukla brings extensive political credentials to his new role. A veteran politician and senior BJP leader, he previously served as Governor of Himachal Pradesh. His experience in constitutional positions is complemented by his service as Union Minister of State for Finance in the Government of India from 2017 to 2019.
The incoming Telangana Governor also served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, representing the upper house of Parliament. His long association with the BJP spans several decades, during which he has held various organizational and governmental positions. His appointment is seen as bringing considerable political experience to the gubernatorial office.
Jishnu Dev Varma, who is now moving to Maharashtra, is a prominent BJP leader from Tripura and a member of the former royal family of the state. Before his gubernatorial appointment, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, playing a key role in the state’s administration during the BJP-IPFT coalition government.
The gubernatorial reshuffle is part of a wider reorganization affecting several states across the country. Such reshuffles are routine administrative exercises undertaken by the Central Government to ensure effective governance and fresh perspectives in constitutional positions. The appointments are made on the advice of the Union Cabinet and formally issued by the President of India.
Both Shukla and Varma are expected to assume their new responsibilities in their respective states soon. The transition process at Raj Bhavan in both Telangana and Maharashtra will follow constitutional protocols.
