The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded that the Election Commission of India recognise it as a national party and ensure it receives all the facilities that a national party is entitled to during the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls. AAP Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sanjay Singh expressed his disappointment that the poll panel has not yet made a decision on the matter, despite the party fulfilling the requirements needed to be declared a national party with its performance in Punjab, Gujarat and Goa polls last year. Singh claimed that the Election Commission had assured him at an all-party meeting that a decision will be taken on AAP’s request soon. To earn national party status, a political outfit needs to be recognised as a state party in four states and have at least two members in the respective legislative assemblies. The AAP has been recognised as a state party in Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Gujarat.
