Hyderabad: On Saturday, food safety officers unexpectedly inspected the diet kitchens at three government hospitals. They visited the Government Maternity Hospital Sultan Bazar, Government ENT Hospital Koti, and Area Hospital Nampally. They discovered serious hygiene and safety issues.

The inspections showed bins of rice and raw vegetables on the floor, posing a risk of pest infestation due to poor drainage and broken window screens. Exhaust systems were greasy and dirty, and racks were rusted.

Food handlers were not wearing proper hygiene gear like caps and aprons. They also lacked necessary Food Safety Training and Certification (FOSTAC).

Officials have issued notices to the kitchen contractors. Hospital superintendents must take immediate corrective action.

Similar inspections took place across Telangana in restaurants and bakeries. The raids found expired and stale food, poor sanitation, pest control issues, and licensing problems. In some places, there was improper separation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods, and expired condiments were discovered. Hazardous items were disposed of on the spot, and owners received official warnings.
