Hyderabad: Lenskart — the leading Indian eyewear manufacturer and retailer — is setting up a massive 50-acre integrated manufacturing facility near Hyderabad, in an area chosen for its proximity to the airport. The project, which has drawn state government backing, is expected to significantly expand the company’s production capacity and create large-scale employment.

Project Overview & Government Collaboration

  • The new facility will be located in Tukkuguda (Non-SEZ General Park, Raviryal) on the outskirts of Hyderabad — an area selected for its proximity to the airport, facilitating easier export and cargo logistics.

  • The project stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Lenskart with the government of Telangana in December 2024 for an investment of ₹1,500 crore.

Scale, Capacity, and Jobs

  • The 50-acre integrated facility is planned as a full-spectrum eyewear manufacturing hub — handling frame, lens, and complete eyewear production under one roof.

  • According to Lenskart and Government sources, the plant will not only cater to domestic demand but also serve export markets across Asia and the Middle East.

  • Regarding employment, earlier statements had indicated around 2,100 jobs, with the first phase expected to be operational by late 2025.

  • The company’s filings and other reports suggest the potential for much higher job creation — some estimates (in preliminary applications) reportedly put the number as high as 5,000 jobs, reflecting the long-term employment scope once the plant is fully operational.

Why Hyderabad? What Factors Led to the Decision

Several strategic factors contributed to Lenskart’s decision to choose Hyderabad:

  • As the company planned to export a significant portion of its production, proximity to a major airport and dedicated cargo logistics were key — the Hyderabad location near the airport reportedly offered better freight connectivity than competing options.

  • The state government acted swiftly: a specially formed task force engaged with Lenskart early, and the project received formal approval from the state’s Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM), fast-tracking land allotment.

  • The broader industrial environment in Telangana — including availability of skilled manpower, policy support for industry, and a push to make Hyderabad a manufacturing and export hub — made the state an attractive location.

Significance: For Lenskart and Telangana

  • For Lenskart, this facility represents a major scaling up — enabling it to transition from primarily retail-oriented operations to high-volume manufacturing, improving supply chain control, lowering lead times, and boosting export potential.

  • For Telangana, the project brings in large investment, creation of thousands of jobs, and adds momentum to its ambition of becoming a major manufacturing and export hub. The facility underscores the state’s appeal to high-tech and export-oriented industries, reinforcing its “investor-friendly” credentials.
