Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University in Telangana has won the Best University Award from IIT Bombay. This award is part of the National Geospatial Awards 2025 – Edition 02 and celebrates the university’s dedication to promoting Free and Open-Source Software for Education (FOSSEE-GIS).
The award was given during the Open-Source GIS Day Celebrations at IIT Bombay. This event honors institutions that excel in geospatial science and education.
Vice Chancellor Dr. D. Raji Reddy, a climatologist, accepted the award for the university. He emphasized how Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping is changing the horticulture sector. Dr. Reddy stated that the university is mapping horticultural orchards in Telangana and sees GIS as a key tool to help farmers and improve agricultural planning.
Kiran Kumar, the former Chairman of ISRO, presented the award as the Chief Guest. Dr. Reddy mentioned that this recognition is a major achievement for the university, highlighting its efforts in combining technology with agriculture through innovation and outreach.
Additionally, Dr. K. Veeranjaneyulu, a consultant at the university, received the Excellence in Outreach Award. He was recognized for his dedication to the FOSSEE initiative and efforts to raise geospatial awareness among students and educators.
The event saw attendance from important figures like Dr. A. Bhagwan, the Registrar, and other dignitaries. SKLTGHU plans to host a GIS Hackathon soon to boost student involvement and innovation in geospatial technology. This national recognition underscores the university’s leadership in using open-source tools to advance education and agriculture through digital empowerment.
