Speaker Urges Removal of Conocarpus Plants from Haritha Haram Program
Hyderabad: Speaker G Prasad Kumar has advised the government to remove conocarpus plants that were planted during the Haritha Haram initiative under the BRS regime. He stated that these plants do not provide any benefits to humans.
The Speaker made this suggestion while intervening in a discussion on demands in the Assembly. This happened when BRS MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy was speaking about the Haritha Haram program. Reddy claimed that the program had increased the forest cover in the state by seven percent. He also mentioned that a 33 percent forest cover is necessary for maintaining balance.
Interrupting the discussion, Speaker Prasad Kumar pointed out that conocarpus plants, which were planted as part of the initiative, do not consume water but instead take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. He argued that such plants are useless for humans and requested the government to remove them.
In response, the BRS MLA clarified that out of the 2.5 crore saplings planted under Haritha Haram, conocarpus plants made up less than one percent.
