The Telangana government plans to seek the intervention of President Droupadi Murmu to approve a bill that proposes a 42% quota for Backward Classes (BC) in local bodies.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will lead a team to New Delhi from August 5 to 7 to meet the President. Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, leader in the Rajya Sabha, will also join.
The state sent the BC quota bill to the President in March, seeking approval to increase the quota.
During a cabinet meeting on Monday, it was agreed to urge the President to approve all pending bills. BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar briefed the media, announcing that the delegation would arrive in Delhi on August 4. They plan to meet with the Congress leadership to finalize the meeting schedule with the President. State ministers will also engage with Congress allies to gain their support for the BC quota bill.
Prabhakar called on Union Minister for Coal G Kishan Reddy and BJP state unit President N Ramachander Rao to back the state government in securing approvals for pending legislation. He highlighted that the High Court directed local body elections to be held by the end of September, stressing the financial difficulties faced by local bodies due to election delays.
The minister urged BC leaders and intellectuals from Telangana to join the efforts in Delhi to push for the quota increase. He accused opposition parties of hindering the government’s attempts to enhance the BC quota.
